Description
The motif plays with the question of who actually provides protection and who receives protection in this scene.
The fable "The Lion and the Mouse," attributed to Aesop, tells of a lion who spares a small mouse after it disturbs him while he is sleeping. When the lion is later caught in a net, the mouse returns and frees him by gnawing through the ropes.
The story shows that even someone who appears small and weak can achieve great things. At the same time, the connection between the two animals becomes a symbol of mutual help, trust, and overcoming differences.
